A press kit's job isn't to impress. It's to make saying yes to your book as easy as possible for someone with an inbox full of pitches.

A press kit (or media kit) is a single package — usually a page on your website plus a downloadable PDF — that gives a journalist, podcast host or reviewer everything they need to cover your book without emailing you back to ask for it. The entire point is removing friction: the easier you make it for someone to say yes quickly, the more likely they actually will.
At minimum, a working press kit includes: a short and a long author bio (most outlets want one or the other, not both crammed together), high-resolution author photos and cover art, a one-paragraph and a one-page book description, a handful of suggested interview questions or talking points, any existing praise or review quotes, and direct contact information that reaches you or your team quickly. Missing any one of these is usually what turns a maybe into a pass, simply because it adds a step the journalist doesn't have time for.
Specificity. A generic “my book is about resilience” pitch is easy to skip; a pitch with three concrete, quotable talking points tied to something currently in the news or relevant to that outlet's audience is much harder to pass on. The suggested interview questions matter more than most authors expect — hosts are often working through a backlog of guests and genuinely appreciate not having to invent the angle themselves.
The most frequent ones: photos and cover art too low-resolution to actually print or broadcast; a bio that reads like a resume instead of a person; no suggested angle, leaving the journalist to invent a reason to cover you; and a kit that's only a static PDF with no live page a journalist can quickly scan on mobile between other tasks.
The strongest press kits are built around a specific angle for your specific book, not a generic template with the blanks filled in. If you want help getting yours ready before outreach starts, see our press & media kit creation service.
